IT'S POSSESSION TIME!!!

It's finally here!!! Let me join in the fangirl shrieks everywhere and let out a huge SQUEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! for a very sweet friend of mine. Today is the official book birthday of the absolutely fabulous Elana Johnson's debut novel, POSSESSION. I love this book...LOVE it. And am very excited to help spread the love around a little :D

Here is the blurb and gorgeous cover for those of you who haven't seen it yet :)

Vi knows the Rule: Girls don’t walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn…and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi’s future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.

But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they’re set on convincing Vi to become one of them….starting by brainwashed Zenn. Vi can’t leave Zenn in the Thinkers’ hands, but she’s wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous: everything Zenn’s not. Vi can’t quite trust Jag and can’t quite resist him, but she also can’t give up on Zenn.

This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.

*happy sigh* To celebrate, IT'S GIVEAWAY TIME!!!!

I will, of course, be giving away a copy of this awesome book. BUT this is just too big and too exciting so I have to throw in a little something else. One lucky winner will get not only their very own, shiny copy of POSSESSION, but will also get a "POSSESSION" necklace. (Please forgive me as my camera is on the fritz...I will post a pic as soon as I can) This adorable necklace has a Zen pendant, Violet beads, two silver butterflies, and comes with a "Jag"ged surprise :) (no, unfortunately, not hottie Jag himself) ;-)

To enter, just leave a comment. I'll take entries until Sunday at midnight and will announce the winner on Monday morning. There are more giveaways and POSSESSION awesomeness happening all over the place today! Check out Elana's blog and Christine Fonseca's blog for some good links and if you find any others, feel free to post them here and share them everywhere!

    Good luck and CONGRATS ELANA!!!!

Blog Tour Stop for the Fabulous Christine Fonseca and 101 Success Secrets for Gifted Kids

The absolutely amazing Christine Fonseca is celebrating the release of her second book, 101 Success Secrets for Gifted Kids, and I am honored to be one of the first stops on her Blog Tour :D

Any parent or teacher of a gifted child needs to purchase this book! It's geared directly to the children themselves, and offers tips and advice both from Christine and from other gifted students. This book covers everything from how to deal with parents' and teachers' expectations, and the expectations the kids place on themselves, to how to deal with stress, struggles in school and with friends, and learning what being gifted really means. It really is just a wonderful book :)

Now, for a special treat, we get to hear from the awesome Christine herself :D Take it away, Christine! :D

Some of my Fav Tips from 101 Success Secrets

YAY! Today is the first day of the official Blog Book Tour for 101 Success Secrets in Gifted Kids. It seemed only appropriate to start things off on Michelle’s blog. When I asked her what we should do, she immediately thought of a vlog…

    Yea, um….

They turned out horrible. No really – HORRIBLE!!! I am far to vain to let the horrible embarrassment of that vlogging attempt out…So, instead, I enlisted the help of my daughter and decided to present two of my favorite success tips. These are the exact tips I do with kids on my parent-kid workshops. So, I guess this is sort-of a mini workshop!Enjoy…

So, did you enjoy it? Trust me, both techniques really help kids and adults focus on that which they can change and keep some of their emotions at bay. For more information on this and other aspects of giftedness, check out 101 SUCCESS SECRETS FOR GIFTED KIDS. Written for kids, this books covers perfectionism, performance, friends and more using tip sheets, quizzes and fun activities.

Thanks so much for stopping by Christine, and CONGRATS!!!!

And even more awesomeness :D GIVEAWAY TIME!!! I will choose one lucky commenter to win a copy of Christine's fabulous book! Simply enter a comment on this post by midnight Friday and you are entered! I will randomly select a name and announce the winner on Monday. Good luck everyone and congrats again Christine!!

First Stop on Christine Fonseca's Blog Tour for Emotional Intensity in Gifted Students

I am honored and very proud to be launching the blog tour of my very sweet friend and awesome crit partner Christine Fonseca. Her book, Emotional Intensity in Gifted Students releases today! If you or anyone you know is a gifted student or knows one, you NEED this book. This is the book I wish my parents had had when I was a kid. I spent more time writing "Oh my goodness, this is so ME!" in the margins of the pages than I did marking anything that needed editing LOL

This book is quite simply phenomenal and you should run, not walk, to get your own copy. There has already been major buzz about this book in the gifted community and I have no doubt this book will soon be a staple for educator training and parental help.

Christine has stopped by to tell us a bit more about her book.

Welcome Christine, and huge congratulations on the release of your book!

MM: So, what exactly is emotional intensity?

CF: You know that crazy feeling that everything is either too loud, too beautiful, too hard, too easy, too…everything??? That is emotional intensity. Creative types often approach the world with this point of view, often feeling like they are one step shy of bi-polar. Gifted types are this way by definition. It’s an aspect of what it means to be gifted.

MM: Why did you write this book? Why is it necessary?

CF: I love this question! I wrote this book after counseling gifted children and parents and discovering something they all had in common – this bizarrely intense way of approaching the world. It didn’t matter what they were doing – they did it with a level of intensity and passion I only consistently saw in this group.

So, I did some research and discovered that while the “experts” certainly saw emotional intensity as a feature of giftedness, most teachers and professionals working with this population not only DID NOT see this, but they doubted the authenticity of it. Kids were getting diagnosed with pretty significant mental health issues when, at times, it was actually an issue of intensity – with how this population views and interacts with the world.

Thus this book was born. It was my attempt to educate parents and teachers on what emotional intensity really is and how to help teach children the strategies they need to better cope. I have designed it to be easy-to-read and full of worksheets, checklists and tips to help parents navigate through the often turbulent world of parenting gifted kids.

MM: People often view gifted students as being very independent, self-sufficient – in other words, being smart enough that they are more than capable of taking care of themselves, that they don’t need the same kind of support that “regular” kids need. Anyone who knows a gifted student, or who was once a gifted student themselves knows this is very untrue. What other myths do you debunk in your book?

CF: Ah, the mythology of giftedness! Truthfully, myths are very prevalent with regards to the gifted. So much so that the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) has pages and pages dedicated to the topic!

For my book, EMOTIONAL INTENSITY IN GIFTED STUDENTS, I tackled several myths related to learning and emotional development, including the following incorrect assumptions:
    • All children are gifted in some way
    • Children who fail can not be gifted
    • Gifted children are happy and well adjusted in school
    • Children with disabilities can not be gifted
    • Gifted children don’t require additional supports in order to be successful

By presenting the actual characteristics of giftedness, as well as utilizing case studies and role play scenarios, I hope that I’ve dispelled each and every one of the above myths.

MM: What is the one thing you’d really like people to understand about gifted students/emotional intensity?

CF: Great question! I think I want to tell people that being gifted MEANS being intense – and that this intensity is typically NOT a mental health issue. It’s just the way we look at the world. I want people to stop seeing the behavior – the bossiness, the outbursts, the mood swings – as a problem, and see it for the passion it represents. Then, and only then, are we free to teach kids how to cope with this aspect of their personality, instead of trying to hide it or pretend it isn’t there at all – often with disastrous results!

MM: What can you tell us about your future projects?

CF: Ahhh, future projects. I’ve been think about this a lot of late. In the world of non-fiction, I have been exploring the need for a book related to giftedness and bullying, as well as something on teaching/coaching creativity or the Imposter Syndrome in kids. All good topics, I think. Who knows what will actually make its way into a book!

As many of you know, I also write fiction – YA fiction to be exact. I have recently finished up a paranormal romance that highlights forbidden love. My current fiction WiP is a contemporary piece – an issue book. Interestingly enough, the MC is gifted.

Christine, thank you so much for stopping by. And congrats again on such a wonderful book! Christine's second book, 101 Success Secrets for Gifted Kids will be coming out next Spring. Keep an eye out for it!

Fun stuff!!! If you'd like to win a SIGNED copy of Christine's fabulous book, Emotional Intensity in Gifted Students, all you need to do is comment on this post. Simple! (International entries welcome) :)

Author Spotlight Week - Interview with Mr. Awesome, Shaun David Hutchinson

Welcome to Spotlight Week and welcome to our spotlighted author, Shaun David Hutchinson! I met Mr. Shaun through another awesome writer friend, Cole Gibsen, who nominated her agent buddy for our Blog Chain group. It has been a true pleasure getting to know this funny and insanely talented writer. If you haven't checked out his site yet, be sure to do so. There is a truly awesome set of photos and video of Shaun celebrating his book release. You've gotta go see :D

    Now on to our interview!

MM: Your book, The Deathday Letter, was recently published. Congratulations!! Can you tell us a little about the book?

SDH: Thanks! The Deathday Letter is about a fifteen-year-old boy who gets a letter telling him he's got twenty-four hours to live. The story follows him through the entire day. There's humor and pizza and hippies and pudding and a little smooching.

MM: You celebrated your book release in a fun/crazy/unusual way – by jumping out of a plane!!! I know that was a first for you. Has anything else about you or your life changed now that your book is out?

SDH: Sadly, no. I mean, I've gotten to connect with some really amazing people, but I still go to my day job and hit the gym and try to think up ideas for more books. Okay, strike that. One thing has changed, but it changed around the time I was writing the book. I spend more time enjoying the little moments in life.

MM: I know as writers we often have all these expectations about how things will be once we reach that huge goal of publication. Did you have any expectations? Have they been realized or not?

SDH: Ahhhh, the dreaded expectations. I used to think I'd sell a book and life would be cake. I'd make enough money to live on comfortably and spend my days writing. The truth is less glamorous but still loads of fun. Writing is not the path to riches. If you want to be rich, go become a lawyer. But I have to say that it's the things I didn't expect that made all of this so worthwhile.

MM: What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

SDH: That people think I'm funny. I never considered myself funny. Now that people have read my book they're always like, "Say something funny," and all I can do is stare at my shoes and try not to drool.

MM: LOL I think you are much funnier than you give yourself credit for - have you read your blog?? :D Well, what about you? Who is Shaun David Hutchinson ? What do you love to do, besides writing?

SDH: I'm a total geek. A lazy geek. I'm really passionate about music. I always loved singing but I suck at it so I make due by listening to more music than I have a right to. I also love movies and TV. I'm a junkie for British television. Following up with the skydiving, my next step is to take the classes to get certified.

MM: Tell us a little about finding your agent and your road to publication

SDH: Finding Chris at Upstart Crow was an awesome experience. I admit to being really naive about the whole situation. I wrote Deathday in about six weeks. I was heading out on a trip to London and Paris and I decided I'd send out queries before I left. Most agents had a 3-6 week lead time so I thought I'd be safe. I hadn't even finished revising yet! I got my first response two hours after sending out my query. I got a lot of requests. Chris was a new agent then and his boss at the time handed my query to him. Chris emailed me while I was in London and we traded emails and phone calls back and forth. I was actually in a Starbucks in London when he made the offer. Of course I had to wait a little bit to talk to other agents, but Chris was (and is) such a great guy that I knew he was the agent for me. I've never regretted that decision.
As for publication, well we submitted to a bunch of houses after doing a couple rounds of revision. It was Anica Mrose Rissi over at Simon Pulse who said she had some really great ideas for this story if I was willing to do some major revisions. We talked and I knew she was the editor for me. I ended up rewriting about half of the book, but she helped me find the true focus of Ollie's story, and again, I've never regretted my decision.

MM: What was the hardest part of this journey for you? The easiest, or most fun?

SDH: The hardest part was definitely making the big changes. While I know now that they made my book a thousand times better, at the time they were a little hard to swallow. Luckily I had a great agent and amazing friends who helped me keep everything in perspective.

The easiest AND most fun has been connecting to readers and writers and bloggers. The book community is so vast but so welcoming. I'm not a social person by nature...I'm a bit of a recluse, but I've found great friends throughout all this.

    MM: Quick 5:

Dark or milk chocolate? Dark chocolate, definitely!
Even numbers or odd? Hmmm. Odd.
Swimming pool or ocean? I live on the beach, so definitely ocean.
    Movie theater or DVD? DVD.
Sandals – with or without socks? Wow, okay, well my high school self would have said with socks but I know better now. Definitely without.

    Thanks so much, Shaun!

Don't forget to enter our contest, everyone! We will be giving away two copies of Shaun's book, The Deathday Letter, with the added awesomeness of Shaun's shiny new autograph! All you have to do is leave a comment :D

The WOOHOO I'm Finished Grand Giveaway!!!

First of all, HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY! I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday

And second of all - I FINISHED THE BOOK!!!!!

Well, mostly LOL I did finish all the chapters and major rewrites. I do still have a medium-sized tweak for chapter 5 to do and a few minor tweaks throughout the book. BUT, all chapters, 1-17, the introduction, and the about the author section have been completed and the little stuff left will be done in a couple days.

So.....I'm feeling the need to celebrate :D

This one will be easy - just make sure you are a follower and leave a comment ON THIS POST. And that's it! You are entered! I will take entries until Saturday night at 11:59 pm.

    Now for the prizes!!!

When I finish a project, I generally celebrate by diving into a good book, eating some good chocolate, and buying some gorgeous jewelry from my amazingly talented friend Bonny (who is also doing a giveaway on her blog, so click on her name and go check it out!).

So, I thought I'd share my celebration with you :) The glorious grand prize will include:

A beautiful bracelet from Bonny Lass Jewelry:

Yummy mouth-watering gourmet apples from Mrs. Prindables:

And a $10 gift card to the online book dealer of your choice  :)

    Extra Entry Opps:

    - Be or become a Follower of my other blog (which I promise I'll start posting more on!) Papers, Prose, and Poetry = +1

    and
    - Tweet, blog, Facebook, or otherwise share the joy = +1 for each (for a total of 4 extra entries)

So everyone has the opportunity for 6 entries - but you MUST leave a comment on this post to enter, so don't forget! Let me know how many points you have in your comment and I will announce the winner next Monday.

Good luck and thanks for celebrating with me!!!

Spreading the Awesome - P.C. and Kristin Cast

The fabulous Elana Johnson decided to Spread a little Awesome, and invited a few friends along  :) Today is Spread the Awesome Day. Basically, I and many other writers will be singing the praises of one of our favorite books and its author. We will link our posts so you can follow through the most awesome Recommended Reading List ever. Speaking of which, be sure to head to Shelli Johannes-Wells blog for her choice of Awesome.

I cheated a little and chose a series instead of just one book - The House of Night series, by P.C. and Kristin Cast.

My very sweet stepkids got the first three books for me for Christmas 2008. I had them done in a day a piece and immediately ordered the rest of the series. A.W.E.S.O.M.E.

At the time, I was very new to YA and MG writing - the Twilight series was about all I had read of the genre. So opening the first book of the House of Night series was a new YA adventure for me.

I found a fun world where vampires are a part of normal society - still a little feared, mistrusted, "different", but it is a world where the best and brightest actors, artists and scientific minds are vampires - where being a vampire is a genetic trait - where you are marked as a teenager and sent off to a private vampire school where your body may or may not accept the change into adult vampirehood.

The series follows Zoey Redbird, an exceptional fledgling who exhibits powers and abilities (along with wicked awesome tattoos) far beyond her years and experience. Throughout the series, Zoey learns the meaning of true friendship, love and betrayal, sacrifice and service, and fights the forces of pure evil.

She is supported by a seriously awesome cast of secondary characters including several love interests to literally die for, a cowgirl best friend named Stevie Rae who becomes a whole new type of vampire, and the resident witch with a B, Aphrodite, who you can't help but love.

It's a wild ride and an awesome fun read. With incredibly beautiful covers :)

For more information on P.C. and Kristin Cast, visit their website. P.C. has written many other novels in addition to the House of Night series, which she co-authors with her daughter, who also has several solo novels. For more information on the House of Night series, visit the site devoted to it HERE.

And now for some fun stuff....I couldn't very well tell you how awesome this series is without giving you a chance to own part of it for yourself!

    GIVEAWAY TIME!!!!!

Just fill out the form below, hit Submit, and you are entered! I'll take entries for the next week, until midnight, Sunday May 9th. Our grand prize winner will be announced bright and early Monday morning, May 10th.

Since some of you may have read all or part of this series and some of you may be newcomers that would like to start it, I'm going to give you a choice of prizes :D Click on the titles for the book summaries.

Prize Choice 1: Book 1 of the House of Night series - Marked

Prize Choice 2: Book 7 of the House of Night series - Burned (just released!)

Prize Choice 3: The Triple Moon necklace, created for the House of Night series

If you have started the series and are somewhere between books 1 and 7 and would like another one instead, just choose either one of the book options in the form below. I'll double check with the winner what book in the series they'd like to have. :)
