Health Care Cartoon: Borrow my Umbrella

I had the idea for this cartoon as a result of the heath care reform bill passing and the speaker of the house getting up and celebrating the passage of the bill which is fine….must have been tough to get everyone bribed I mean primed for the vote. It’s always good to celebrate a victory. The thing I found interesting was during her speech she made reference to the historical event that took place and likened it to the passage of Social Security and Medicare both of which are on their way to insolvency. It just struck me as odd that someone who some would view to be somewhat intelligent would use such a poor example of government making history. I think something like it’s passed, it’s historical and uhm…..have a nice day might have been better. Oh well….another day another entitlement, go figure. The cost of this thing is going to be……well…….staggering doesn’t quite do it……hmmm………crippling! That’s the word I’m looking for. Don’t fret about it though; it will most likely be the kids and grandkids that catch the economic smack down from this entitlement. We have Social Security to beat us about the head and neck, so it’s not like we won’t get ours. Though the explanation of where this cartoon came from was a little longer than I had first hoped and filled with a lot of sarcasm…..please don’t let that stop you from enjoying it. Valentine Cartoon: Laugh it up

This Valentine cartoon came to me today as a result of working on some other cartoons while listening to the news. I heard the jobless claims number come out and the media was off to the races. It was then that it occurred to me that there is no cupid in department stores or at the mall like they do with so many other holidays. Santa, the Easter Bunny and of course many dress up for Halloween but why no cupid?


That thought bounced around up there in the Medulla Oblongata for a while and then it hit me. The reason is basically what this Valentine cartoon represents. I mean really…what would you do if you saw this guy parading around the mall trying to spread Valentines cheer? Can anyone say SECURITY!


That is the most logical reason I could come up with for the absence of Cupid prior to Valentines Day. The only other thing might be that no one will dress up like this but given the poor job market….who knows what might be lurking at the mall this year.

Valentine Cartoon: Spreading the Love

I had this valentine cartoon idea as a result of making some time to try and come up with a couple new valentine card ideas. The cards have not yet come as a result of working on the ideas but this is a valentine cartoon that did come out of the exercise.


Valentines Day…..a day to show people you love that yes your really do love them. The valentine fairy goes around shooting people with its arrows trying to help people find each other. Who thought of that one?......What I mean is….at face value it does sound a little well….violent I guess. Think about it for a second…..There is someone out there wielding a compound bow looking for targets for their Valentine concoction like a little love sniper or something. It’s all a little creepy at face value. Oh well, maybe it’s just my overactive imagination at work again.

Polar Bear Cartoon: Greenhouse Gas Kills the Mood

This polar bear cartoon came as a result of the other polar bear cartoons I have done in the past as well as a couple of other things that kind of bounced together in my head. I had read some article that the polar bears were having a tough time dealing with the changes in their environment and according to the article there was a possibility that the polar bears could be extinct some years from now. The point to the article was that greenhouse gases where causing this problem for the polar bears.


The last piece of the puzzle is that Valentines day is coming up and I thought of this specific cartoon as a result of the article and the thought that if polar bears where going to celebrate the holiday they would most likely kick back by the fire and snuggle…..right. Wrong, it turns out that one of them happens to be up on the whole greenhouse gas thing. The cartoon is one possible conversation that might happen. Enjoy and have a great day.

Turtle Cartoon: Shell of a Man

I had the idea for this cartoon after trying to come up with ideas for cartoons in general. I was having a little cartoonist mental block and used a couple of techniques that I use to get out of these blocks. There are several ways in which I try to get myself out of a block. One is just grabbing a piece of scratch paper and drawing whatever comes to mind. It does not always translate to an idea but just the act of drawing helps my mind to get unstuck.

Another way in which I try to get my goofiness flowing is to take an animal or a situation and see how many ways I can manipulate it into something that vaguely resembles a funny idea for a cartoon. This technique is most often the one that helps remove my mental blocks; in fact, it was this last technique that spawned this turtle cartoon.

I just stated thinking about turtles and what they do, how they act and what their strengths and weaknesses might be. Then it occurred to me that in a turtle relationship this type of thing probably happens. Married for a while, couple of kids and the grind of a turtle existence start's to take its toll and soon the turtle couple doesn’t recognize each other for the turtles they fell in love with. George Washington Cartoon: Has to be a better way

     I did this George Washington cartoon for a couple of reasons. One is that I thought it would be fun and make for a decent product line for my gallery. Two, I have been goofing around with doing cartoons based on history or historical figures recently which has been a result of some of the reading that I have been doing lately.

     George Washington is one of my favorite figures of the past, which there are many so I thought I would do the first cartoon with him. I was thinking that it must have been tough to write with the ink and quill or at least much tougher than writing today by comparison. I wonder how much writing George Washington and others in history would have been able to achieve if they had things like electricity for lights to replace candle light or computers and software other than a bottle of ink and quills. I guess the answer is naturally, quite a bit more.

     It was all of this thought that was bouncing around up there in my brain that led to the creation of this George Washington cartoon. I have a couple of other ideas for George Washington cartoons but those will have to keep for a later time. As always, enjoy the cartoon and have a great day.

Cartoon Rabbit: Down the Rabbit Hole

I had the idea for this little rabbit cartoon as a result of just doodling the other day and after starting the rabbit, I just started adding to it. In other words it kind of took shape while I was goofing around with it. As I finished the rabbit dressed in army gear I started to wonder about the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland. More to the point, I could not remember the name of the rabbit in "Alice in Wonderland" so I looked it up and as far as I could find from the little bit of research I did, the white rabbit didn’t really have a name. The character was known as only the white rabbit. I was then thinking how the dialogue might change if I plugged my little rabbit character into the story and this was the result. Funny old lady cartoon character

Here is a funny old lady character that I finished today. I know….I know it probably needs some explanation. I can just hear it now….


”This guy is a weirdo…..I mean who in their right mind would spend time drawing a naked old lady but someone who was a pervert or just generally mentally unstable.”


To put all your minds at ease at least as much as I can…..she is a character for a birthday card that I did….I’m not sure if that makes anyone feel better but at least you know it’s not because of the two aforementioned reasons which is important to me. Funny Birthday Cartoon: Birthday Cluelessness

I had the idea for this funny birthday cartoon as a result of my own Birthday that passed this last year. The reason I had the idea was because I had forgot it was my birthday until family and friends decided to remind me of it that is. I woke up and it was a day like any other with tons of things I wanted to get done. I didn’t feel any older or anything that happens when that day of the year comes around. I have to say that after the kindness of the all Happy Birthday’s from friends and family which I appreciated my focus changed a little to “My goodness where has the time gone?” so I thought what if I was clueless about my birthday like I had been that morning. Would I feel better? I don’t have any clue because it will never happen that all my very cool friends and family let that happen, a fact that I am very grateful for. Funny Obama Cartoons: Twitter Frustrations

I thought of this funny Obama cartoon as a result of a funny bit I heard on a radio talk show where the discussion was about speeches and the overuse of certain words by speech writers for the different presidents. The first example that was given was President Bush where there was a montage of different speeches and the word “comprehensive” was played over and over again. I thought it was pretty funny myself, then they moved on to President Obama and analyzed his speeches and so far it looks like the word “unprecedented” is going to be the word that ends up in a montage sometime later in his presidency. Anyway, I was thinking about it and imagining how difficult it would be to say or talk about something that would qualify as something “unprecedented” while using twitter. I think it would be a challenge. I’m not sure why I thought about it like this but I did and this funny Obama cartoon was the result. Enjoy and have a great day.

Political Cartoons: New Year’s Resolutions

I did this one as a result of this being new years and the thought that everyone does the whole resolution thing. You know what I mean….”this year is the year I stop eating junk food”….”this year I’m going to stop smoking”….”this year I’m going to loose x amount of pounds and get healthy”. For those of you who have said these types of things and followed through…..I salute you, I have not found that fountain of willpower quite yet but I have not given up…..so yes I have made my list of things I would like to change this year and currently have every intention of taking actions to make them happen. I was wondering if those in Washington do some of the same things with their jobs. Like “this year I resolve to be less corrupt than last year”, I use “less” because lets face it….if someone decided to be completely uncorrupt they probably would not be re-elected or at a minimum not get anything done for the people they represent. That’s seems to be the way it is…..has been….and possibly will always be. The phrase, “Don’t hate the player…hate the game”, comes to mind. New Year’s Cartoon: Dine and Dash

I did something like this cartoon last year in fact I took a look at it and the caption referred to the old year leaving the baby new year with a big bill. I decided to do this one without the years attached to their banners because it occurred to me that over the decades the argument can be made that no matter who is in the white house or the congress, one thing has remained constant. Spending…..spending and more spending. The only thing that has not remained constant is the amounts. That trend has definitely been on the upward trend. I wonder how long it will go on. What will my kids…..kids…..kids lives be like? Anyway, I redid the cartoon without the years in place because based on history the future will most likely result in more of the same….at least that is where I would place my bet. Funny Polar Bear Cartoons: Start the Grill

I got the idea for this funny Polar Bear Cartoon as I was drawing the Nature vs. Nurture cartoon I posted previously and because of a commercial I saw oddly enough, as I was drawing that cartoon. I say oddly enough because my ideas seem to come from different stimuli that I see and hear during my sleep hours as well as my hours awake. I do believe it is a noble thing to help the wildlife that needs help weather or not you believe that need arises as a result of or actions or not and in no way am I saying it should not be done. I just tend to look at things in a rather sarcastic way and for some reason I still can’t help thinking about the relationship between wildlife and humans as one that is and will in many cases always be one way. It is that belief that continues to give me these goofy ideas about things that may or may not happen as a result of that relationship in the context of a non-realistic cartoon world. This cartoon is one of those things that just pop into my head as a result of that thought process. Enjoy and have a great day.
