A Writer's Christmas

I think I'm probably a hard person to shop for. My poor husband doesn't want to give me a gift card every year but he knows my first response when he asks me what I want for Christmas is going to be - books :D

So this year I made him a list. It includes:

• A gift card for books - because really, as boring as he might think this is, it ROCKS
• Office supplies - again, he might snooze, but man does my little heart go pitter-pat when I get my hands on a bunch of new pens and post its and notebooks oooo and especially organizational stuff like binders and bins and cork boards and those really pretty push pins and paper clips and....well you get the point :D
• Computer software - I specifically asked for Scrivener and that software that will read your manuscript to you
• Music - I asked for some specifics (Apocalyptica, Chopin, Evanescence...my typical mood setting stuff) :)
• Aqua Notes - have you seen these things?! It's a notepad you hang IN YOUR SHOWER. I get probably 80% of my awesome ideas and epiphanies in the shower and I forget about 80% of those before I get out of the shower. NO MORE! If I find these in my stocking I can write down those awesome ideas before they go down the drain :D (p.s. saw these first on Stina's blog - she's got a great Xmas list for writers going to - check it out!)
• I used to ask for uninterrupted writing time :D but with both my kidlets in school full time now, I can write while they are gone during the day. But this is a great gift for writers who have to squeeze their writing time in between jobs and/or kids or other obligations.

A Writer's Christmas

So my husband and I were sitting at the table the other day discussing what to get the kids, and each other, for Christmas this year. I usually just get my own presents and pretend I'm all surprised :) but this year I'm making him get me something (aren't I mean? Mwahaha) I told him I already had his present picked out. He said he had no idea what to get me.

I'm confused by this.

Aside from the fact that we've been married almost 10 years, I'm a writer. I'm not that hard to figure out. I'd be giddy over a few spiral notebooks and a new pack of pens. Especially if there was a cute stack of designer PostIts on top. (I heart me some stationary!) Sure, there are some "harder to figure out" gifts I'd really enjoy like a few new computer programs or maybe some new CDs for my playlist.

But really, if you are ever in doubt about what to get a writer, you can resort to the always popular gift card to your local bookstore. I go after new books the way our cat goes after cat nip. Want to make me really happy? Get me a huge gift card to the bookstore and a new bookshelf to put all my shiny new pretties on....and a pile of new stationary 'cause like I said, that stuff is ALWAYS fun :)

What is your ideal Christmas gift? What do you think the perfect writer gift would be?

p.s. thanks for all the "warm" wishes :) The heater is still out (we've dropped a few more degrees so I am REALLY hoping the heater parts come in SOON) but we are really doing okay. It's toasty warm upstairs in the bedrooms with the doors closed and the space heaters going full blast, so we've just been hanging out up there. My real whine is because my laptop is dead until my new charger gets here (hopefully today!) so, since the main computer is downstairs and it's too cold to work down there, I'm not getting anything productive done. Except laundry. But, you know, I'd rather be writing LOL

This cartoon came as a result of thinking about Santa and Christmas in general. I was thinking about what a tough gig it must be to get everything together and out the door in one night. I’m sure he has tons of help with it but then there is the rush in one night and the havoc that must create. I know that when I get in a rush to do something there has been times when I wasn’t always completely aware of my surroundings and possible hazards. I was thinking that it must be kind of the same for the jolly big guy on the night. I thought this might be one of the things that could happen if you are not watching your footing while bouncing around on the top of an icy snow filled roof. I know only because I used to work on roofs from time to time and when you are focused on the work at hand it is easy to forget you’re a little higher in the air than normal. I had this funny Christmas cartoon idea as a result of thinking about dogs in general and how they thought about the whole Christmas holiday thing. This cartoon came as a result of that thought and the recent party crashing incident at the White House. You might ask what those two things have to do with each other. Nothing on the surface but some of the media has been reporting it as a “break-in” and I think that is kind of silly. When I think of a “break-in”, I think robbery, theft, bypassing alarms and things like that. Not walking through the front door like you lived there or something. Don’t get me wrong, what those two did, if indeed they did “party crash” a State dinner is possibly one of the least intelligent things I have seen this year so far but “break-in”?, come on media, the sensationalism is getting a little old. Anyway, it was the phrase “break-in” that got me thinking “What would a dog think or do when Santa came down the chimney? That is how this goofy Christmas cartoon clip came to life. Funny Christmas Cartoons: Twilight gift for Christmas

I had the idea for this cartoon comes from a combination of things. One is, for those of you who saw my last entry about the construction worker I had sketched that was haunting me. The second was a couple of commercials that I saw on the topic of team Edward and Team Jacob as well as it being the Christmas season and without being specific about your Christmas wish list, you kind of have to be ok with the fact that you get what you get for the most part. On the subject of the whole “Twilight” thing, I have a couple of friends who are both male that have seen the movie with their families and said that it was kind of a chic-flick, at least to them. I have to say that based on the trailers I have seen, if I had the time I would give it a look not to mention the story behind the author. I think it is one of those positive “you can succeed if you want to” stories. Anyway, the cartoon came from all this stimuli bouncing around in the cartoon factory. Enjoy and have a great day.

Funny Christmas Cartoons: Doggone Merry Christmas

I did this cartoon as a result of just drawing out of boredom. I was goofing around sketching different dogs, cats and a construction worker. Don’t ask how the construction worker fits in there…..I have no clue. I started thinking about words to associate with each of the sketches and one of the dog sketches just looked like “Doggonit” which the urban dictionary defines as “an expression of showing mild or high frustration.” That turned into “Doggone” as in “That food was Doggone tasty!” which then transformed into a “Doggone Merry Christmas”. It sometimes strikes me as strange how my ideas move along from start to finish but at least the ideas keep coming so I’m not going to wonder about it too much at this point. The drawing of the cartoon is a combination of all that thought about words and sketching dogs as well as it being the holidays. I’m not sure if the construction worker will ever make it into anything but he is sitting on the desk next to me, haunting me in a way. Enjoy the cartoon and have a happy holiday season.

I was sitting there watching a football game the other night when I got the idea for this cartoon. I was enjoying a couple of beers and some holiday commercial came on. I started thinking “I wonder if Santa and the elves partake in a beer from time to time. You know, after hard day of making toys for low wages……wait possibly no wages….just room and board and some food from time to time. Wow….it’s no wonder that Hermie, that elf from the movie, “Rudolf the red nose reindeer”, wanted to be a dentist. Video Clip. Anyway, I would think they would pick up a beer from time to time. Then I thought I wonder what would happen if the bunch of them went out on the town like a bunch of frat boys looking for a party and went bar hopping after one of those tough days making toys.
