Political Cartoon Humor, Getting Sheared on Tax Day

This cartoon was birthed from a couple of things. The first being that it is tax time and I look at the taxes and sheering sheep as sort of a similar thing in a kind of sarcastic or cynical way. The second is the current spending spree our elected officials are currently having fun with. The only way in which to pay for this type of spending is through more revenue to the government. Revenue to the government is achieved through taxes in many forms besides income taxes. Thinking about it logically, taxes will have to go up period, end of story. Then the question becomes how? A lot of people seem to think that taxing the rich is the way it looks to be going. While a certain percentage will come from that avenue it will represent a fraction of what is needed to get the debt paid off if that is indeed what the end goal is. Many of us, the middle class and poor, will also share the burden in taxes on things we need every day like heating and cooling, health care and many other products and services we all want and use. The long and short of it is that the rich will most likely pay more but on the scale of percentages the middle class will most likely carry a tax burden like they have never known. The good news is we will get used to it as we have in years past. That is really the focal point of this cartoon. Enjoy and have a great day.

Political Cartoon Humor, Toxic Assets

I have been watching as they announce this toxic asset plan lately and how the market, (usually a forward indicator), reacted to it. Very interesting stuff, a private public plan that is intended to remove some of the assets that are clogging up bank balance sheets in the latest attempt to free up the credit market. At first glance it looks like a great plan but I have gotten used to trying to look at unintended consequences over the past couple years. I do think it can achieve what the administration is hoping to achieve, however, it is trying to create a market where there is no current market. The derivative market that helped get us into the poor economy we are currently experiencing is an example of creating a market where there was no market. My point is simply this, if the wizards of Wall Street managed to mess it up then what in the world makes anyone think that our government has the talent to manage it. As I said the law of unintended consequences usually prevails and that is what made me think that the public will somehow get the short end of the stick or be on the hook for the whole thing as well and also gave me the idea for this cartoon. A funny farmer story!

One weekend a lawyer from New York decided to go bird hunting in Vermont. The lawyer drove to Vermont and found a good hunting spot near a farm. The lawyer sees a bird, shoots it and watches fall to the ground on the other side of the barns fence.

The lawyer, thinking to himself that's my bird I have to go get it, climbs the fence retrieves the bird and climbs back. Just as he gets back over the farmer comes up to him and says, "give me my bird." The lawyer says to him " your bird no no no I shot this bird it is mine."

"No" says the farmer,"it landed on my property it is mine." "Look" says the lawyer, "I am a lawyer, I will sue you , you will lose and I will get the duck." "No" says the farmer, "that's not how we do it here in Vermont, we use the three kick rule."

"Ok" says the lawyer, how does that work?" "I kick you three times as hard as I can, than you kick me as hard as you an three time and we keep going until one of us gives up." "Fine" says the lawyer, "let's go." "I'll go first" says the famer. So the famer kicks layer as hard as he can in the groin.

And just as lawyer is bent over in pain the famer kicks him right in the face. now just as the lawyer is thinking what did IU get myself into the farmer kicks him in the stomach. after the lawyer gets over the agonizing pain he says ok now it's my turn. No the farmer says, "I quit you can have the duck."

Political Cartoon Humor, The Use of Political Capital

There has been a lot of talk this week about the AIG bonuses, Government Budgets, the economy and a variety of other subjects including the President going on late night TV, another first for a standing president. I thought of this cartoon because of this late night TV appearance. It seems to me that whenever a perceived crisis, conspiracy or whatever you want to call it, the president leaves Washington and to cash in on some of that popularity capital that he has been given from his followers. The reason I say this is that he remains popular as a president while the policies seem to be loosing traction which would indicate that he has done a good job of separating himself from his policies. If that is the plan it seems to have worked thus far. Anyway, it gave me the idea for this cartoon. Enjoy and have a great day.

I was thinking about all the missteps and gaffs as well as all the examples of people in government posturing for their next election cycle only to have to re-posture because the first one ended up putting them on the un-popular side of an issue. It must be mind numbing to be a politician right now.

Political Cartoon Humor, The Audacity of Hope-ocrisy

I had the idea for this cartoon a little while ago but did not do it because there were so many other things I had on my list of “things to do”. I finally got around to it and all things considered, it seems more relevant today. I have been watching and reading the media clips and trying to look beyond what all the hype to try to figure out what is going on in the background. It is starting to feel like most of what you see and read is just a smoke screen to keep our eye on the right or left hand while the opposite hand is taking the wallet out of your back pocket…..I don’t know but for some reason it just feels that way to me. Anyway, this cartoon is an accumulation of all the silly things that I have observed from the current goofballs in Washington. I say current because I believe that this is nothing that is really new by any stretch of the imagination but for one reason or another, the level has been taken to the power of 10. I was listening to the chatter on one of the news channels while surfing the web and they where talking about doom and gloom in the real estate market and the high rate of foreclosures across the nation. They also happened to be discussing how many people are upset having their tax dollars going to helping people who got into situations were they are unable to pay their mortgage. They were specifically talking about people who put themselves in that situation by misstating income just to get into the house knowing they would not be able to sustain their lifestyle after the loan readjusted. At about the same time I happened across a Home based business ad on the web and this was the result of those two ideas crossing paths in my mind. I guess a person who was without a home and decided to start selling boxes for a profit would either one, be a real estate agent of sorts or most likely have himself a homeless based business.

Political Cartoon Humor, Republicans and Democrats on Pork Bills

This cartoon came as a result of a lot of different stimulus. First is the talk about the Governments domestic budget both now and in the future but most of all the 8500 plus ear marks of “pork” that’s in its current form. I have been listening to the back and forth about how one side defends it by saying its last year’s business even though it runs through September of this year. I guess the general consensus on Capitol Hill is that we the American people are all not intelligent enough to figure that one out. Bottom line is that it does not matter what year it is for, promises are promises and President Obama made the promise to the American people that pork or ear marks would not be part of his administration. Oh well, I guess we are all suppose to shrug like we have so many times in the past and give them a pass like so many times in the past. The second stimulus came from all this talk about how officials are using things like twitter and the like to communicate to …….I’m not sure who. I thought it would be funny to put them in a setting similar to the pop-culture crowd. What would they say? Well, here is the result of all of that mess. Enjoy and have a great day.

The death of common sense

I got the idea for this cartoon from the article that follows:

Travelling in the UK these past few weeks has given me a much clearer indication of just how much social standards have deteriorated and just why I have become “a grumpy old man”
Every time I visit, I think to myself “I must leave these shores - and soon” and then, rather like awakening from a bad dream, I realise that I already have and being here is just a temporary inconvenience. You cannot imagine the relief.
Most of all, I have witnessed the death of “common sense”

Here is his obituary:

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were lost long ago in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn’t always fair; and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by his four stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I’m A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
